Teen arraigned on attempted murder in shooting of 49ers rookie says he is ‘very sorry’
San Francisco 49ers rookie running back Anthony Dixon was shot and wounded in a drive-by shooting early Saturday
Dixon was driving a white GMC Yukon when he was shot multiple times in the back and legs in the city’s Western Addition neighborhood just after 3 a.m. A passenger in the vehicle was not injured.
The 49ers released a statement Saturday saying Dixon was in stable condition and is expected to make a full recovery. The team said it was “deeply saddened” by the incident and is cooperating with the police investigation.
The suspect, 19-year-old Marquise Aaron, was arrested on Sunday and arraigned Monday on charges of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon
Aaron appeared in court Monday afternoon and pleaded not guilty to the charges. He is being held without bail at the San Francisco County Jail.
According to the San Francisco Police Department, Aaron allegedly fired several shots at Dixon’s vehicle from a passing car. Police said they do not know the motive for the shooting.
Dixon told investigators that he did not know the suspect and had never seen him before
Dixon said he was driving home from a party when the shooting occurred. He said he was not involved in any altercation prior to the shooting.
Aaron’s attorney, John Burris, said his client is “very sorry” for what happened and that he did not intend to shoot Dixon.
“He’s a young man who made a terrible mistake,” Burris said. “He’s very sorry for what happened and he’s going to take responsibility for his actions.”
The shooting has raised concerns about the safety of NFL players in San Francisco
The 49ers have a long history of players being involved in shootings. In 2015, former 49ers player Chris Culliver was shot and wounded in a drive-by shooting in Sacramento.
The team has taken steps to increase security for its players, including hiring a private security firm to patrol the team’s practice facility and stadium.
The NFL has also issued a statement condemning the shooting and calling for increased security for players
The league said it is “deeply concerned” about the safety of its players and is working with law enforcement to investigate the incident.
The NFL said it is also working with its teams to develop new security measures to protect players.
